TUCSON, Ariz. – Led by senior Luke Sheenan’s 1-under 71, Stephen F. Austin sits 11th following the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament, hosted by Arizona. The Lumberjacks shot a 2-over 290 in round one, remaining in the hunt against a competitive field.
Sheehan opened up the opening round with a 2-under 34 over the front nine, followed by a 1-over 37 on the back. He finished one stroke better than senior teammate Nathan Weant who posted an even-par 72 through the opening 18 holes.
Freshman Angelo Leyvani had a strong opening round as well, firing a 1-over 73. Sophomore Tony Underwood added a 2-over 74 with junior Major Monzingo posting a 5-over 77 to round out the Lumberjack scorecard.
Through the opening round of competition, SFA remains firmly in the mix as just five strokes separate fourth place from 11th. The Lumberjacks are one shot back of 10th-place Notre Dame (1-over 289) and are two back of Iowa State, New Mexico State and UC Davis (Even par 288), who are in a three-way tie for seventh. The ‘Jacks enter day two with a one shot lead on UTEP (3-over 291) and are two shots better than both San Jose State and Utah (4-over 292).
Nevada and Santa Clara hold the lead after 18 holes as both schools posted a 10-under 278 in round one. Wyoming (6-under 282) is in third with host Arizona (3-under 285) and Colorado State (2-under 286) rounding out the top five.
Monday’s second round gets underway at 9 a.m. CT with the Lumberjacks playing with both Notre Dame and UTEP in the round two pairings. Live scoring is available at BirdieFire.com with full results posted to SFAJacks.com as they become available.
