OXFORD, Miss. – The Stephen F. Austin softball team gave up a five-spot to UTSA in the first inning of the Ole Miss Classic finale on Sunday morning and couldn’t recover, falling 10-2 in six innings. The Ladyjacks finish the weekend tournament with a 1-4 record.
The Roadrunners used a sacrifice fly, a two-run homer and a two-run single in the first inning to jump out in front 5-0. The Ladyjacks responded with two runs with two outs in the bottom half.
Courtney Chambers opened the first frame by taking first base after getting plunked by a pitch. Two outs later, Taylor Fraccastoro singled up the middle to keep the inning alive and send Taylor LeFlore to the plate. The junior drew a walk, loading the bases for Lindsay Campbell. Campbell then ripped a single to the gap in left center and Chambers and Fraccastoro each scored to cut the UTSA lead to 5-2.
SFA wouldn’t get any closer, however, as UTSA scored four more runs in the third and one more in the sixth to cut the game short after six innings with an eight-run advantage. The Roadrunners outhit the ‘Jacks 17-8 on the morning.
Senior outfielders Alisa Hamilton and Campbell led SFA with two hits for the day. Brittany Lewis and Faith Talley joined Fraccastoro and LeFlore with one hit apiece.
Senior Hannah Welch (L, 0-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in one inning pitched. Lewis gave up five runs – four earned – on 10 hits the rest of the way.
The Ladyjacks will open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against Texas Southern. The game will be played at SFA Softball Field.
