OXFORD, Miss. - In two tight games on Friday to start the Ole Miss Classic, the Stephen F. Austin softball team came away with a split at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Ladyjacks edged UTSA 3-1 before narrowly falling to Ole Miss 4-2 in the nightcap.
While SFA mustered just seven hits overall on the day, freshman Faith Talley and junior Brittany Lewis each clubbed home runs to account for four of the `Jacks' five runs scored.
After spotting the Roadrunners a run in the second inning of game one, SFA answered with two of its own in the bottom half. Lindsay Campbell drew a two-out walk to set up Talley's first career home run - a two-run blast to left field. The dinger leapfrogged the `Jacks in front 2-1.
Taylor Fraccastoro padded SFA's lead to 3-1 in the fourth after smacking a leadoff single to center. Campbell walked and Talley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, giving Taylor Vick the opportunity to drive Fraccastoro home on a sacrifice fly.
Lewis (W, 3-2) was superb in the circle, spinning a complete seven innings with just one run on six hits.
Lewis used her bat to make an impact in SFA's second game against the Rebels. Falling behind 4-0 after five innings, the first baseman crushed a two-run homer in the sixth to cut Ole Miss' lead in half at 4-2. Courtney Chambers climbed aboard in the previous at-bat to benefit from Lewis' second long ball of the season.
The Ladyjacks produced baserunners throughout the game but couldn't add any more runs. Sophomores Makayla Sikes and Callee Guffey combined for 6.0 innings in the circle. Sikes (L, 0-4) allowed four runs on six hits while striking out four batters. Guffey surrendered just one hit in two scoreless innings of relief to close the game.
SFA will take on UNI on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. and will then play at 4:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. depending on day two results. Live stats will be provided through the Tournament Central Page here.
