RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Stephen F. Austin wrapped up its visit to the west coast, finishing sixth at the 2016 Battle at the Rock at Oak Quarry Golf Club. The Ladyjacks finished with a 123-over 978 for the two-day event, registering its lowest round of the tournament with a 24-over 312.
Junior Ann Holcomb paced the way for the Ladyjacks, registering the fifth top-20 showing of her SFA career by finishing 12th among the 45-player field. Holcomb finished the Battle at the Rock with a 22-over 238, including a 6-over 78 in round three, finishing nine shots better than senior teammate Sydney Reed’s 31-over 247, finishing 25th.
Junior Jessie White shot the low round of the day for SFA, posting a 5-over 77 and finishing with a 34-over 250, good enough for 27th overall. Sophomore Jamee Jorgensen finished 29th with a 38-over 254, including a 7-over 79 in round three, with senior Mackenzie Steiner rounding out the scorecard with a 42-over 258.
Conditions were much better than Monday’s opening rounds, helping result in the 24-stroke improvement from Tuesday’s round two. The Ladyjacks nearly caught fifth-place Cal State Bakersfield (119-over 983), finishing four shots back of a top-five showing. SFA easily raced past the two teams trailing it, defeating Idaho State (203-over 1,067) and Texas Southern (212-over 1,076) by a significant margin.
Santa Clara took the tournament title with a 53-over 917, defeating host UC-Riverside (62-over 926) by nine strokes. Butler (78-over 942) finished third with Missouri-Kansas City (88-over 952) and Cal State Bakersfield rounding out the top-five.
After playing seven tournaments in six different states this season, SFA will remain in the Lone Star state for the final four events of the 2015-16 season, beginning with the UTRGV Invitational. The event will be held March 6-8 in McAllen as coach Stefanie Gray returns to her alma mater.
