RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Battling unforgiving winds and a challenging field, Stephen F. Austin sits sixth after the opening two rounds of the Battle at the Rock at Oak Quarry Golf Club. The Ladyjacks shoot a 99-over 675 through the opening 36 holes, yet still remain in position to make a run at a top-five finish.
Competing against winds that hovered between 15-25 miles an hour throughout the day, with gusts upwards of 40 mph, SFA opened the tournament with a 51-over 339 as each team struggled to post low scores. Junior Ann Holcomb led the way for the Ladyjacks with a 7-over 79, but she was the only SFA golfer to shoot a sub-80 round over the opening 18 holes.
Round two didn’t get much better, however the Ladyjacks were able to trim three strokes off their round one score, carding a 48-over 336. Holcomb was joined by senior Sydney Reed as the low round for SFA with a 9-over 81 in the afternoon stanza, followed by a 14-over 86 from sophomore Jamee Jorgensen.
Through 36 holes, Holcomb sits tied for seventh with a 16-over 160, sitting 10 shots back of the individual leader. Reed is looking to crack the top-20 as well, tied for 24th after round two with a 25-over 169, carding an 88 and an 81 on the day.
Junior Jessie White is 28th in the individual standings after posting a 29-over 173 (84-89). Jorgensen shot a 31-over 175 (89-86) with senior Mackenzie Steiner’s 32-over 176 (88-88) rounding out the SFA scorecard.
Despite the difficult conditions, SFA still remains in the hunt for a top-five showing, trailing fifth-place Cal State Bakersfield (92-over 668) by seven strokes. The Ladyjacks shouldn’t fall any lower than sixth as SFA holds a 47-stroke lead on seventh-place Idaho State (146-over 722) and is 60 shots better than eighth-place Texas Southern (159-over 735).
Santa Clara holds the team lead after 36 holes with a 50-over 626, leading host UC-Riverside (64-over 640) by 14 shots. Butler (72-over 648) and Missouri-Kansas City (78-over 654) sit third and fourth with Cal State Bakersfield rounding out the top-five.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway with a shotgun start, beginning at 10 a.m. CT. The Ladyjacks will play with UMKC and Cal State Bakersfield in the final round pairings with full results posted to SFAJacks.com as they become available.
