ORLANDO, Fla. – The Stephen F. Austin softball team fell victim to two defeats on the second day of the Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Saturday. The Ladyjacks dropped a 6-2 contest to Stetson before losing to No. 10 Georgia 9-0 in six innings.
Stetson scored two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to get out to a 6-0 lead on SFA in game one. The Ladyjacks had opportunities to get on the board throughout but couldn’t push a run across until the sixth frame.
Brittany Lewis reach on an error, and singles by Taylor Fraccastoro and Faith Talley loaded the bases with one out. Senior Lindsay Campbell later ripped an RBI single through the left side to plate the first run of the day. A fielding error allowed Talley to touch home as well, cutting into Stetson’s lead, 6-2.
SFA wasn’t able to come any closer, however, and lost despite recording as many hits (8) and two fewer errors than Stetson.
Lewis went 2-for-4 in the game while Heather Hollingsworth also had two base knocks, going 2-for-3 in the outing.
Sophomore Callee Guffey (L, 1-1) allowed six runs – five earned – on six hits and seven walks in 4.2 innings. Lewis tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to close the game.
The Ladyjacks couldn’t pull off the upset in their second game of the day against No. 10 Georgia. The Bulldogs scored runs in five of six innings to run away from SFA in six innings, 9-0.
Fraccastoro and Campbell recorded the only two hits in the game for SFA.
Sophomore Makayla Sikes (L, 0-3) surrendered all nine runs in 6.0 innings of work, while just six were earned. Like Guffey, Sikes walked seven batters but struck out eight on the afternoon.
