NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin junior safety Marlon Walls has once again been selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, announced today by the organization. It is the second-straight all-district honor for Walls who was also a first team selection in 2015.
Walls has been a mainstay in the Lumberjack defensive backfield for the last two seasons, experiencing his best season in 2016. The Pearland native ranks third on the team with 44 total tackles, including leading SFA with 26 solo tackles. Walls has registered 1.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and a forced fumble on the year, starting in seven of the ‘Jacks’ eight games.
Walls has tallied 73 tackles during his Lumberjack career, including 48 solo tackles, three tackles for loss, six pass breakups and a pair of forced fumbles. Walls also has a pair of career interceptions, including a pick against Trevon Boykin of TCU and a pick-six in the victory over Incarnate Word in 2015.
For his successes on the field, Walls also has excelled off the field as well. A 2016 AFCA Good Works team nominee, he has been active in both the Nacogdoches and Houston area communities, assisting in a number of community service initiatives. A perfect 4.00 student majoring in engineering physics, Walls was the recipient of the prestigious Brian Patric Hanson Memorial Physics Scholarship, given annually to an SFA physics major with the highest GPA in advanced physics classes.
Walls is one of eight Southland Conference players that earned Academic All-District honors. Nominated by and voted on by sports information directors across the country, Walls now advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot where first, second and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Walls and the rest of the Lumberjacks will return to Homer Bryce Stadium Saturday, getting set to take on 17th-ranked Central Arkansas on Homecoming. Kickoff against the Bears is set for 2:30 p.m. as the game will air nationally on the American Sports Network.
