LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Sophomore Angelo Leyvani remains in the hunt for an individual medal at the 2016 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, New Mexico, sitting tied for sixth with a 1-under 141 after the opening two rounds of competition. Leyvani has paced Stephen F. Austin to a seventh-place showing as the Lumberjacks carded a 15-over 583 through 36 holes.

The ‘Jacks opened up the 54-hole event with an impressive 3-under 281 on the par-71 course, sitting third overall after round one. Senior Major Monzingo led SFA with a 3-under 68, one shot off his career-low 67 round in February of this year. He was two shots better than Leyvani’s 1-under 70 with senior Baxter Ward shooting an even-par 71 and senior Cory Brown adding a 1-over 72 to round out the scoring for the Lumberjacks.
SFA struggled in round two, however, adding 21 shots to its opening round total, finishing with an 18-over 302 and slipping four spots back to seventh in the team standings. Leyvani remained strong for the ‘Jacks with an even-par 71 but the rest of the squad saw significant score increases as Monzingo and Ward both posted 5-over 76s and Brown and freshman Zach Sudinsky both shot an 8-over 79.
After 36 holes of competition, Leyvani is tied for sixth individually at 1-under 141, seven shots back of the individual leader after round two. He is joined in the top-20 by Monzingo, sitting tied for 17th with a 2-over 144.
Ward is tied for 31st individually at 5-over 147 with Brown (9-over 151) and Sudinsky (15-over 157) rounding out the Lumberjack scorecard.
Entering Tuesday’s final round, SFA finds itself four shots back of sixth-place Odessa College (11-over 579) and is eight strokes behind fifth-place Wichita State (7-over 575) as the ‘Jacks seek their second top-five team finish of the 2016-17 season. The Lumberjacks enter the final round one shot ahead of rival Sam Houston State (16-over 584) and is three shots ahead of ninth-place Oral Roberts (18-over 586).
Grand Canyon holds a commanding lead through the opening two rounds of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, shooting an 11-under 557 and leading second-place Missouri-Kansas City (1-over 569) by 12 strokes. UTEP (4-over 572) is in third with host New Mexico State (6-over 574) and the Shockers rounding out the top-five.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway with a shotgun start, beginning at 10:15 a.m. CT. SFA will play with Sam Houston State and Oral Roberts in the final round pairings with live scoring available at GolfStat.com.
