READING, Pa. – Stephen F. Austin had to wait an extra day to return to the lanes in Reading, Pennsylvania, but the Ladyjacks made the most of the delay, posting a 4-1 record over the final round of the Kutztown Invitational. SFA closes out the event with a 9-2 overall mark, finishing third in the team standings.
Individually, sophomore Stephanie Schwartz was named to the all-tournament team after finishing third in scoring average with a 226.4, bowling over 200 in four of her five games on the day. Freshman Dakotah Hazelwood was the second SFA finisher, placing 19th overall with a 203.6 average.
Feeling the full effect of Winter Storm Jonas that hit the eastern portion of the United States, Saturday’s competition schedule was canceled. An abbreviated tournament field resumed play Sunday, competing in traditional team matches. SFA opened Sunday’s play with a 990-957 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson, despite a 208 from junior Carly Larson and a 203 from Schwartz.
Round two pitted SFA against Sacred Heart as the Ladyjacks rebounded with a 931-881 victory. No Ladyjacks bowled over 200 in the win, but all five bowlers were within 15 pins of each other to give a balanced attack, led by a 194 from senior Danielle Lynn and Schwartz’s 190.
SFA then faced Southland Bowling League foe Monmouth and kept its winning ways going, downing the Hawks 1,059-945. Three Ladyjacks surpassed the 200-pin mark, led by Schwartz’s 256, a 226 from Larson and a 212 from Hazelwood to help propel SFA to the victory.
Round four saw SFA’s best team effort of the day as the Ladyjacks compiled a tournament-best 1,103, outlasting Wisconsin-Whitewater for a 1,103-1,054 victory. Four of the five Ladyjack bowlers reached 200, led by a team-best 267 from Schwartz. Lynn bowled a season-high 240 with Hazelwood’s 210 and freshman Paige Beeney’s 201 helping pace the Ladyjacks.
SFA closed out the event on a positive note, winning its fourth-straight match with a 973-885 victory over Bethune-Cookman. Hazelwood was the top performer for SFA in the day’s final match, bowling a 224, followed by a 216 from Schwartz and a 206 from Anderson.
The 4-1 mark on the day gave the Ladyjacks a 9-2 record for the weekend, improving their season record to 42-22 (.656). It marks the ninth time in program history SFA has finished a tournament in third-place or better as the Ladyjacks run their streak of top-10 tournament finishes to 27 events, dating back to the 2012-13 season.
The road doesn’t get much easier for SFA, however, as after finally returning back to Nacogdoches Monday evening following a cancelled Sunday flight, the Ladyjacks will head back on the road Thursday, traveling to Arlington for the Prairie View A&M Invitational. The event gets underway Friday, January 29th, at the International Research and Training Center and continues through Sunday, January 31st, marking SFA’s third tournament in as many weekends.
