JONESBORO, Ark. – Stephen F. Austin closed out the 2016 Arkansas State Mid-Winter Invitational on a strong note, going 2-1 over the final day of competition to place sixth among the challenging 14-team field. The Ladyjacks closed out the event with an overall record of 9-4 as six of the wins came over top-15 teams.
Entering the final day as the seventh overall seed, SFA began the best-of-seven baker style bracket play against eighth-seeded Maryland-Eastern Shore. After dropping the opener to the Hawks 198-155, SFA regrouped in strong fashion, sweeping the final four games to take the match 4-1. The Ladyjacks reached the 200-pin mark in three of the final four games, including a 236 in game four.
The victory pitted SFA against Nebraska in round two as the Cornhuskers and Ladyjacks split the first four games as SFA took games two (223-193) and three (171-151). But it was the Ladyjacks that found its groove, taking game five 224-201 before sealing the victory with a 199-175 in game six, improving to 9-3 over the three-day event.
The final match of the tournament saw SFA face emerging rival Wisconsin-Whitewater in a battle for fifth-place. Similarly to its match against Nebraska, the two teams split the first four games as the Ladyjacks won games one (219-179) and four (222-146). But it proved to be a mirror image of the Nebraska match as the Warhawks won the final two games, handing SFA the 4-2 defeat as the Ladyjacks settled into a sixth-place finish.
The finish in Arkansas gives SFA another top-10 team finish, extending its streak to 26-straight tournaments dating back to the 2012-13 season. With its 9-4 finish over the weekend, including six victories over teams ranked in the top-15, SFA improves to 33-20 on the season.
There will be little rest for the Ladyjacks as SFA closes out the first of three tournaments in as many weekends. Up next is a trip to Reading, Pennsylvania, for the 2016 Kutztown Invitational , getting underway Friday, January 22nd before wrapping up Sunday, January 24th.
