BASTROP, Texas -- Senior Blake Pugh captured the second individual tournament title of his career, shooting a career-low 9-under 207 to win the 2015 Jim West Intercollegiate. Pugh paced Stephen F. Austin to a third-place finish as the Lumberjacks finished the 54-hole event with a 3-over 867.
Pugh entered the final 18 holes tied for first with a 6-under 136, then proceeded to card a 3-under 69 over the final round to clinch the individual title. The 9-under 207 shattered his previous career low of 210, set at the 2013 Houston Baptist Husky Invitational, while the 207 is tied for the second-lowest 54 hole total in program history, tying former teammate Mitchell McLeroy (2012), Brian Grossman (2003) and Trevor Sauntry (2002).
It is the second tournament title for Pugh, who captured the individual crown at the 2014 Incarnate Word James Litz Memorial last March. Pugh now has 10 top-10 finishes for his Lumberjack career and 24 top-20 showings as he becomes the third SFA golfer to claim an individual tournament title this season (Baxter Ward and Luke Sheehan tied for the ASU Fall Beach Classic title in November).
Pugh spearheaded the rest of the Lumberjacks in Bastrop, finishing 16 shots better than teammates Luke Sheehan and Tony Underwood, both of which tied for 36th overall with a 7-over 223. Nathan Weant tied for 46th with an 8-over 224 while Bradley Phelps closed out the tournament with a 12-over 228.
As a team, SFA posted a 1-over 289 for the third-straight round, closing out the 54-hole event at 3-over 867 and finishing nine strokes better than both Arkansas-Little Rock and UT-Arlington, which tied for fourth at 12-over 876. Saint Mary's captured the team title with a 6-under 858, finishing one stroke better than rival Sam Houston State's 5-under 859.
The Bearkats and Lumberjacks finished 1-2 among the Southland Conference schools competing in the event as Central Arkansas placed 12th with a 30-over 894. Houston Baptist finished 13th (44-over 908) with Abilene Christian placing 15th (56-over 920).
Up next for SFA is a trip to Bryan, Texas, competing in the 2015 Texas A&M Reveille Challenge. The one-day event will be a 36-hole tournament, getting underway Sunday morning at the Traditions Golf Club. It will be the final tune-up for the Lumberjacks before the 2015 Southland Conference Championships, being held April 20-22 in McKinney, Texas.
