BASTROP, Texas -- Senior Blake Pugh sits tied for first through the opening two rounds of the 2015 Jim West Intercollegiate, firing a 6-under 138 through the opening 36 holes. The senior's performance has paced Stephen F. Austin, which is tied for third at 2-over 578 after day one.
Pugh opened up the day with a solid 2-under 70 in round one, but was the second-lowest SFA golfer behind senior Bradley Phelps' 4-under 68. Pugh then matched Phelps' production in round two, shaving four strokes off his opening round total to card the 6-under 138, putting him in a tie with Central Arkansas' Pep Angles for the tournament lead.
Phelps followed up his 4-under 68 in round one with a 7-over 79 in round two and sits at 3-over 147 through two rounds, tying for 30th overall. He is two strokes ahead of junior Luke Sheehan, posting a 5-over 149 (76-73), who is tied for 39th overall.
Freshman Tony Underwood notched a pair of 75s, sitting at 6-over 150 for the day and tied for 46th overall. He leads junior Nathan Weant (7-over 151) by one stroke after Weant posted a 78-73 on the day.
SFA opened up the 54-hole event with a 1-over 289 in round one, which was good enough for a third-place showing after 18 holes. The `Jacks then matched that output with another 1-over 289 in round two, sitting a respectable 2-over par with 18 holes left to play.
SFA closes day one tied with Arkansas-Little Rock for third, seven shots back of second-place Sam Houston State (5-under 571). Saint Mary's leads the 15-team field with a 7-under 569 through day one with Wichita State (5-over 581) sitting three shots back of both the Lumberjacks and Trojans to round out the top-five.
The `Jacks enter Tuesday's final round sitting second out of five Southland Conference schools competing in the Jim West Intercollegiate. Sitting seven shots back of the second-place Bearkats, SFA is 16 shots better than 11th-place Central Arkansas (18-over 594), 22 strokes ahead of 13th-place Abilene Christian (24-over 600) and is 26 shots better than 14th-place Houston Baptist (28-over 604).
The final round of the Jim West Intercollegiate gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Playing in foursomes, the `Jacks will be teamed up with St. Mary's, Sam Houston State and Arkansas-Little Rock, teeing off on holes 1-4.
