NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team couldn't get much going offensively and surrendered seven home runs in two games on Saturday afternoon, falling to Northwestern State 4-2 in game one and 8-0 in game two at SFA Softball Field. The Ladyjacks fall to 10-12 in Southland Conference play with just four games remaining in the league schedule.
The Lady Demons (30-15, 19-2 SLC) showed why they are the best team in the conference this year, using three homers in game one and four more in game two to power their way to a two-game sweep. In the first game, all four runs came as a result of the three dingers.
Trailing 4-0 heading into the seventh inning, the Ladyjacks finally got something going at the plate. After Katelyn Standley was hit by a pitch, Autumn Holloway singled up the middle. Both runners advanced a bag on a throwing error on Holloway's base hit to put runners on second and third with just one out. Taylor Vick helped get SFA on the board with an RBI groundout and Heather Hollingsworth later drove in Holloway on an RBI infield single with two outs.
The 4-2 deficit was as close as the Ladyjacks would get, however, falling by the same score.
Freshman Callee Guffey (10-12) tossed a complete 7.0 innings, allowed four runs on six hits, walked two and fanned five on the day.
Northwestern State's Mikayla Brown (9-2) picked up the game one win, allowing one earned run on five hits over seven innings. She struck out seven.
In game two, the Lady Demons got two home runs from Brittany Jones and two more from Micayla Sorosiak to account for most of the contest's scoring. The visiting team scored three runs in the fourth and sixth innings and added a single run in the second and seventh frames as well.
The Ladyjacks use a committee effort in the circle as Makayla Sikes, Hannah Welch and Brittany Lewis all made appearances.
For the Lady Demons, Micaela Bouvier (12-4) earned the win after tossing the complete game shutout. Sorosiak went a perfect 4-for-4 with two homers in game two and was 6-for-7 with three home runs, three runs and four RBI between the two games to pace the offense.
The Ladyjacks mustered just 10 hits between the two games with four coming from Hollingsworth. The junior went 4-for-7 with an RBI to lead SFA at the plate.
SFA and Northwestern State will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m. out at SFA Softball Field.
