SFA Sets Sights On 2015 SLC Tournament

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin prepares to make a run at a conference tournament title this weekend as the Ladyjacks head to Beaumont for the 2015 Southland Conference Tennis Championships.
The Ladyjacks head into the tournament as the number two overall seed after tying Nicholls for the regular season conference championship, the Ladyjacks' second SLC title in program history. Both schools posted a 10-1 record on the season with Nicholls earning the number one seed due to the Colonels' 4-3 win over the Ladyjacks on April 11.
The tournament gets underway Friday morning at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center with SFA beginning its tournament appearance at 2 p.m., facing seventh-seeded New Orleans. The Ladyjacks defeated the Privateers 5-2 in New Orleans on April 4, taking two of three doubles matches and four of six singles bouts.
Saturday's semifinal gets underway at 11 a.m. as the winner of the SFA/New Orleans match will face the winner of the McNeese State/A&M-Corpus Christi quarterfinal match. The 2015 SLC championship game is set for 11 a.m. Sunday, April 26.
SFA will be led by five-time All-SLC selection Malena Gordo, who was named a second team singles selection earlier this week. The senior will be complemented by the conference's Freshman of the Year in Vivienne Kulicke, who was also named a first team All-SLC selection. Kulicke and doubles partner Valeria Terentyeva also pulled in all-conference honors, being named a second team doubles selection, with junior Dhanielly Quevedo earning Newcomer of the Year honors.
The Ladyjacks will be seeking the second SLC tournament title in program history after capturing the 2012 title in Nacogdoches. In 2014, SFA's first year under head coach Roberto Aspillaga, the Ladyjacks upset Nicholls 4-1 before falling to Northwestern State 4-2 in the SLC semifinals.
