McKINNEY, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin closed out the 2015 Southland Conference Championships in seventh-place, finishing with a 69-over 933. The Lumberjacks shot a 27-over 315 over the final 18 holes, slipping three spots over the final round of competition.
SFA began the day tied for fourth after play was suspended with teams still on the course in round two Tuesday evening. Thanks to a five-hour lightning delay in round two, the conclusion of the round had to be completed this morning as the `Jacks were tied for fourth with Lamar. But SFA added five shots to both of its first round scores, slipping to seventh among the 11-team field.
Junior Luke Sheehan was the top Lumberjack finisher, tying for 17th overall with a 12-over 228 after posting a 5-over 77 in round three. It marks the 17th top-20 finish of Sheehan's career and his sixth of the 2014-15 season.
Senior Blake Pugh closed out his final tournament as a Lumberjack with an 18-over 234, tying for 26th among the individual standings after a final round 82. Fellow senior Bradley Phelps closed out his SFA career tied for 32nd overall with a 23-over, shooting a 5-over 77 over the final round.
Sophomore Baxter Ward finished tied for 34th overall with a 24-over 240 while junior Nathan Weant placed 38th in his first Southland Conference, shooting a 26-over 242.
SFA closed out the championship just a few shots out of another top-five finish, closing out the tournament one shot back of sixth-place Incarnate Word (68-over 932) and two strokes behind fifth-place Abilene Christian (67-over 931). The Lumberjacks held off eighth-place Houston Baptist (72-over 936), besting the Huskies by three shots.
Sam Houston State rallied to win the 2015 SLC title, posting a 17-over 881 and defeating second-place McNeese State (19-over 883) by two strokes. Southeastern Louisiana (55-over 919) finished third overall with Lamar (60-over 924) and Abilene Christian rounding out the top-five.
The conclusion of the SLC Championship puts a cap on the 2014-15 season for SFA, one which saw a great deal of success. The Lumberjacks finished in the top five in six events on the year, including capturing the team title at the Arkansas State Fall Beach Classic. SFA saw a pair of golfers capture SLC Golfer of the Month titles (Ward and Pugh), posting 12 top-10 individual finishes on the year with a pair of individual titles.
