McKINNEY, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin closed the opening day of the 2015 Southland Conference Championships with a 21-over 309, sitting sixth after the opening 18 holes at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
Junior Luke Sheehan had the low round of the day for the Lumberjacks, shooting a 2-over 74 and sitting tied for 14th among the individual standings. He is the only Lumberjack among the individual top-20 and holds a three shot lead on senior teammate Blake Pugh, who posted a 5-over 77 through the opening 18 holes and is tied for 25th.
Sophomore Baxter Ward shot a 6-over 78 in round one, tied for 28th, and is two shots better than junior Nathan Weant's 8-over 80. Senior Bradley Phelps rounded out the Lumberjack scorecard with an 11-over 83.
SFA's 309 in round one has the Lumberjacks in sixth-place, one shot back of fifth-place New Orleans (20-over 308). The `Jacks hold a three-stroke lead on seventh-place Abilene Christian (24-over 312) and are four shots ahead of both Lamar and Incarnate Word (25-over 313) as the duo is tied for eighth.
Sam Houston State holds the opening round lead, posting an even-par 288 through 18 holes. McNeese State (6-over 294) is six shots back of the Bearkats with Houston Baptist (10-over 298) sitting third. Southeastern Louisiana (16-over 304) is fourth with New Orleans rounding out the top-five.
Tuesday's second round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. with the Lumberjacks teeing off beginning at 9 a.m. in the third wave of teams. SFA will play with fourth-place Southeastern Louisiana and fifth-place New Orleans with live scoring available at Golfstat.com. Full results will be posted at SFAJacks.com as they become available.
