Top Finisher: Jessica White captures individual title on playoff hole (4-over 220)
McKINNEY, Texas -- Sophomore Jessica White captured the 2015 Southland Conference individual title, winning a one-hole playoff to become the first SLC champion in program history. White closed out the 54-hole event with a program-low 4-over 220, highlighted by a 2-under 70 over the final round.
After tying Lamar's Wendy Chang after 54 holes, White birdied the first playoff hole, then watched as Chang's putt was short, cementing the title. It is the best individual finish by a Ladyjack at the SLC Championship, topping the third-place finish by Piper Kyle in 2014.
White's SLC title caps what has been an impressive spring season for the sophomore, who finishes the year with four-straight top-six finishes. After opening up the tournament with a 6-over 78, White recovered with an even-par 72, then posted a 2-under 70 over round three as her 4-over 220 is the lowest 54-hole tournament score in SFA program history.
As a team, SFA posted its best showing in program history at the SLC Championships, finishing fourth overall with a 53-over 917, besting the fifth-place finish by the Ladyjacks in 2014. SFA entered the day in third place overall but struggled over the final 18 holes, shooting a 20-over 308 to slide down one spot to fourth.
Sophomore Ann Holcomb posted a top-20 finish at the conference championships, finishing tied for 15th overall with a 14-over 230, shooting a 7-over 79 over the final 18 holes. Kyle recorded a top-20 finish as well, tying for 20th overall with a 17-over 233, matching Holcomb's 79 over the final round.
Freshman Erica Lautensack tied for 24th among the individual standings with a 19-over 235, finishing the event with an 8-over 80. Junior Mackenzie Steiner closed out the SFA scorecard with a 23-over 239, capped with a 9-over 81 over the final day of competition.
Lamar overtook Central Arkansas over the final 18 holes to win its sixth SLC title, shooting a 28-over 892 and besting the Sugar Bears (37-over 901) by nine shots. Houston Baptist carded an 8-over 296, tied for the lowest round of the day, leapfrogging the Ladyjacks to finish third at 48-over 912 with Sam Houston State (55-over 919) finishing fifth, two strokes back of SFA.
The fourth-place finish caps what has been arguably the best season in Ladyjack program history as SFA finishes the year with six top-five team finishes on the year and 13 individual top-10 showings. SFA posted a program-low scoring average of 306.29, setting multiple program records including the program's first-ever team and individual tournament victories.
