McKINNEY, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin battled through rain delays and wet course conditions, shooting a 23-over 311 and sits third after the opening round of the 2015 Southland Conference Championship at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
After getting about an hour into the opening round this morning, a heavy storm cell roared through the McKinney area, dumping substantial rain throughout the area and delaying play for nearly five hours. Once play resumed in the mid afternoon, SFA battled through the conditions, leading fourth-place Houston Baptist (24-over 312) by one stroke after 18 holes.
Sophomore Piper Kyle and freshman Erica Lautensack were the top two golfers on the day for the Ladyjacks, each carding a 5-over 77 and sitting in a six-player tie for fifth in the individual standings, five strokes back of the individual leader. Sophomore Jessica White was one stroke back with a 6-over 78, tied for 11th individually.
Sophomore Ann Holcomb has also helped pace SFA to the third-place showing, shooting a 7-over 79 and is among an eight player tie for 14th overall. Junior Mackenzie Steiner rounded out the SFA scorecard with a 9-over 81, tied for 27th.
Central Arkansas sits in first place after round one with a 13-over 301, sitting six strokes better than second-place Lamar (19-over 307). The Ladyjacks are four shots behind the Cardinals in third with Houston Baptist and Sam Houston State (28-over 316) rounding out the top-five.
The second round is set to get underway Tuesday morning with SFA paired up with Houston Baptist in round two. Steiner will be the first Ladyjack to tee off at 9:30 a.m., leading up to Lautensack's 10:06 tee time as SFA and HBU will be in the third flight of pairings to get on the course.
