BRYAN, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin senior Blake Pugh had another impressive performance, finishing with a 4-under 140 and capturing runner-up honors at the 2015 Texas A&M Reveille Challenge. Pugh paced the Lumberjacks to a third-place showing, finishing the 36-hole event at 1-over 577.
Coming off his individual title at the Jim West Intercollegiate, Pugh continued to play his best in the final tournaments of the season. He posted a pair of 2-under 70s during the one-day tournament, finishing second overall with a 4-under 140.
Pugh now has 11 top-10 finishes during his SFA career, including four during his senior campaign, as the 140 marks the lowest 36-hole tournament total of his career. Combining the results of the last two events, Pugh has posted a first and second-place showing while shooting a combined 13-under par over his last 90 holes.
Two other Lumberjacks joined Pugh in the top-10 as sophomore Baxter Ward tied for seventh overall with an even-par 144 (69-75), giving him his fifth top-10 finish as a Lumberjack and shattering his previous 36-hole tournament-best of 153. Junior Nathan Weant also notched the first top-10 showing of his SFA career, tying for ninth overall with a 1-over 145 (73-72).
Senior Bradley Phelps notched his eighth career top-20 finish, closing out the day at 4-over 148 following a pair of 74s. Junior Luke Sheehan rounded out the SFA scorecard with a 9-over 153 (76-77).
Electing to play in the one-day event as opposed to the ORU Shootout this weekend, SFA was looking for a strong showing in the final event before the 2015 Southland Conference Championships. The Lumberjacks opened up the day with a 2-under 286, led by a 3-under 69 from Ward and a 2-under 70 from Pugh, siting tied for second with host Texas A&M. SFA added five shots in round two, posting a 3-over 291 to finish at 1-over 577.
The Lumberjacks finished two shots back of second-place North Texas' 1-under 575 as the Mean Green led after round one with an 8-under 280. Host Texas A&M won the event with a 7-under 569, six shots ahead of North Texas and eight shots better than the `Jacks. Texas State (17-over 593) and SLC foe Houston Baptist (18-over 594) rounded out the top-five.
After completing a grueling spring schedule that saw SFA compete in five tournaments in five consecutive weeks, the Lumberjacks will have a little bit of a break before heading to the 2015 Southland Conference Championships next Monday through Wednesday, April 20-22, in Frisco. SFA will look to build on last season's SLC performance when the Lumberjacks tied for third overall, its best conference championship performance since 2003.
