NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin struck first, but Houston Baptist exploded for 13 runs on 13 hits, sweeping the Lumberjacks in the weekend series with a 13-3 decision at Jaycees Field.
SFA got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second as following a pair of HBU errors, Hunter Wilson knocked a deep sacrifice fly to center, allowing Garrett McMullen to score and give the `Jacks the 1-0 lead.
HBU responded the same way they had all weekend, recording four runs in the top of the third to open up a 4-1 lead. The Lumberjacks hung with the Huskies in the bottom half of the inning as Conner Fikes ripped a two RBI single up the middle, pulling the `Jacks to within one at 4-3.
But that was as close as SFA would get to salvaging a win in the series as the Huskies scored three runs each in both the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, breaking open a 13-3 lead that stood until the seventh when the mercy rule took effect.
SFA managed just six hits to HBU's 13 on the day, led by a pair each from McMullen and Nick Ramos with Fikes and Tyler Boxwell recording the other two. For the weekend series, HBU combined to score 33 runs on 46 hits, compared to just 8 runs on 24 runs for the `Jacks.
Jarred Greene took the loss for SFA, allowing seven runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings of work. Patrick Ledet allowed three runs over 1.1 innings with Brett Burrington giving up three in 0.2 innings pitched. Travis Stone came on to allow just one hit over the final 1.1 innings of the game.
SFA closes out a six game home stand and now gets ready for a trip to Fayetteville, Arkansas for a two-game series against the Razorbacks. Game one against the SEC foe is set for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Baum Stadium with game two slated for Wednesday at 3 p.m.
