CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team got one of the best outings of the year from pitcher Hannah Welch, but fell just short in a 1-0 ballgame against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field. The Ladyjacks drop to 9-22 overall and 2-9 in Southland Conference play with the loss.
Welch allowed just one run on eight hits spanning a complete six innings for the Ladyjacks in the third game of the series on Saturday. The junior didn't surrender a walk on the afternoon and the only allowed run came in the form of an RBI single in the sixth inning. Despite a tremendous game inside the circle, Welch (2-3) was charged with the loss as the Ladyjacks were kept off the scoreboard.
The Ladyjacks' best opportunity to score came in the top of the seventh inning as Taylor Fraccastoro singled to left field to lead off. Shalie Day helped Fraccastoro advance to second by laying down a sacrifice bunt. Fraccastoro later took third on a wild pitch with two outs but was stranded there to end the game.
SFA was held to just three hits in the contest. Brittany Lewis and Lindsay Campbell joined Fraccastoro with singles and Day also reached base by way of a bases on balls.
Liz Carter (7-12) picked up the complete game shutout win for the Islanders, who improve to 9-21-1 overall on the season and 4-8 in SLC action.
The Ladyjacks will next head to College Station for a midweek doubleheader against Texas A&M on Wednesday starting at 4:00 p.m. SFA will then host Houston Baptist at SFA Softball Field on Friday and Saturday.
