HOUSTON - Stephen F. Austin posted a 1-2 record over the opening day of the inaugural Southland Bowling League Championship at Del Mar Lanes in Houston. The two losses eliminated the Ladyjacks from championship contention at the double elimination tournament.
The number two seed entering the event, SFA met up with seventh-seeded Monmouth in the opening match. After dropping the opening game 204-198, SFA claimed the second 203-170 to even the best-of-seven series. But the Hawks responded to win the next three 194-185, 218-184 and 206-179, sending SFA into the loser's bracket.
SFA then went head-to-head with sixth-seeded Tulane, dropping the opening game against the Green Wave. SFA responded to win the next two 202-190 and 202-162, only to see Tulane edge out the Ladyjacks 174-173 in game four. SFA claimed the fifth 189-183, but fell in game six 200-181, forcing the decisive game seven, which the Ladyjacks outlasted Tulane 214-202.
SFA then advanced to face fourth-seeded Sam Houston State, dropping the opener 190-179. The Ladyjacks took the next two games 186-173 and 246-201, but the Bearkats rallied to take the next three, including a 191-171 game six decision, eliminating SFA from the tournament.
Third-seeded Vanderbilt has already secured a spot in the championship game, posting a perfect 3-0 record on the day. The Commodores will face the winner of the Arkansas State-Valparaiso match in the championship tilt Sunday afternoon.
SFA now awaits its fate to see if it is one of the eight teams selected to the 2015 NCAA Championships in St. Louis April 8-11. The Ladyjacks entered the weekend ranked fifth overall, hoping to secure the program's first ever berth in the national championships, which will be announced next week.
