SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Texas State on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker in extra innings in game one and falling 9-0 in the second contest. The Ladyjacks have now lost eight straight games and haven't scored a run in 19 innings.
In game one, the Ladyjacks (7-18) and the Bobcats (18-12) played to a scoreless draw after seven innings. After a runner was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth inning, Texas State capitalized on an SFA error to earn the 1-0 walk-off.
Freshman Callee Guffey pitched one of her best games of the season, allowing just the one unearned run in the eighth, while surrendering three hits, three walks and striking out nine in seven innings pitched. Despite the quality start, Guffey (3-7) was charged with the loss.
Alisa Hamilton, Brittany Lewis, Katelyn Standley, Taylor Vick and Autumn Holloway each recorded a hit in the loss as Bobcat pitcher Randi Rupp made things difficult for the Ladyjacks at the plate. Rupp (12-8) struck out 14 batters overall in eight scoreless innings to pick up the win.
In game two, the Ladyjacks were once again held scoreless with Hamilton and Taylor Fraccastoro providing SFA's only two hits. On the other end, the Bobcats scored nine runs on 14 hits, putting up three in the first inning and six in the fourth to end the game in five innings. Kortney Koroll and Ariel Ortiz each homered for Texas State in the game as the duo accounted for six RBI.
The Ladyjacks will return to Southland Conference action this weekend when they host Southeastern Louisiana for a three-game series at SFA Softball Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and then play the finale at noon on Saturday.
