WACO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team got big performances from a trio of freshmen on Saturday evening to down Wichita State 6-3 in the semifinals of the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor. SFA will play No. 10 Baylor in the championship game on Sunday at noon.
The Ladyjacks (2-2) got big hits from Taylor Fraccastoro and Autumn Holloway and a nice outing in the circle from Callee Guffey to defeat the Shockers (2-2) in Saturday’s nightcap.
With the score knotted at 3-3 in the sixth inning, Holloway lined a single up the middle to bring home Fraccastoro and Annie Mehringer and give SFA the 5-3 lead. The timely hit proved to be enough as the Ladyjacks held on for the 6-3 win.
Guffey (1-1), who pitched the entire game for SFA, had a great night to pick up her first collegiate win. She allowed three runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings, walked one and fanned five on the evening.
Fraccastoro helped the Ladyjacks jump out to a 3-0 lead on the Shockers with her second home run in as many days. The catcher sent a solo shot to left-center to lead off the fourth inning. She finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
Heather Hollingsworth helped SFA open up the scoring in the third inning with a sacrifice RBI to bring Alisa Hamilton in from third. Lindsay Campbell, who reached base on a fielder’s choice sac bunt earlier in the inning, scored the Ladyjacks’ second run when Shalie Day doubled through the left side in the next at-bat.
Brittany Lewis led SFA with three hits on the night (3-for-4) and drove in a run in the seventh inning to pad the Ladyjacks’ lead to 6-3. In the tournament, Lewis is hitting a sizzling .583 (7-for-12) with a home run, four RBI and four walks.
In the final round robin game of the tournament, SFA and Wichita State also clashed in Waco on Saturday morning. In what turned into a pitchers’ duel featuring another freshman, the Shockers prevailed 2-1 in game one.
True freshman Makayla Sikes (0-1) pitched very well in her collegiate debut. She surrendered two runs on eight hits in a complete seven innings and struck out two.
After Wichita State scored two runs in the top half of the sixth inning, Fraccastoro came up with a pinch-hit, bases loaded RBI single to bring the score back to 2-1. The Ladyjacks’ rally would fall just short however, despite getting a runner on third with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
