SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior Thomas Walkup paced the Stephen F. Austin men’s basketball team with 28 points and freshman Ty Charles tied his career-high with 19 points in a 90-76 win at Incarnate Word on Monday night inside McDermott Center.
Five Lumberjacks (21-4, 11-1 SLC) finished in double figures against UIW (15-7, 7-5 SLC) as SFA started a new win streak.
Walkup shot an efficient 10-of-13 from the floor with a 3-pointer and 7-of-7 from the line on the night. The native of Pasadena, Texas, also pulled down eight assists, with six coming on the defensive end, and dished out three assists.
Charles just missed establishing a new career-high in both points and rebounds, flirting with his first double-double. He finished 6-of-12 from the field with two hits from deep and 5-of-7 from the free throw line, pulling down nine rebounds for a third time on the season.
Senior Jacob Parker finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Tanner Clayton and Clide Geffrard both netted 11 points. Junior Trey Pinkney captained the offense with six assists and one turnover.
The ‘Jacks enjoyed a balanced shooting performance. As a team, SFA was 58.5 percent (31-53) from the floor, 56.3 percent (9-16) from beyond the arc and 76 percent (19-25) from the charity stripe.
Charles (3-pointer) and Walkup (jumper) opened the game with consecutive buckets for the ‘Jacks, before the Cardinals went on a 7-1 run to take their lone lead of the game at 16:32. The lead was short lived for UIW, as Charles knocked down another 3-pointer, giving him seven of SFA’s first nine points. The ‘Jacks never trailed the rest of the way.
Both teams played relatively close most of the first half, until a Parker 3-pointer gave SFA a 36-26 advantage with 2:19 before the half. The ‘Jacks entered the lockerroom up 41-30.
Walkup recorded 16 points and Parker and Charles each added eight points in the second half for SFA, as the lead never dipped below five over the final 20 minutes in claiming the 90-76 final.
The ‘Jacks will now return to Nacogdoches, closing the regular season with five of their last six inside William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 21, hosting Nicholls in a 6 p.m. tip.
