HOUSTON - Stephen F. Austin remains in second place heading into the final day of the 2015 SFA Stormin' Ladyjack Classic at Palace Lanes in Houston. The Ladyjacks posted a 4-2 mark Saturday, improving to 9-2 for the weekend, and have posted a 206.7 scoring average, second only to top-ranked Nebraska's 209.6.
Facing the top-ranked Cornhuskers in the opening round of the traditional-style matches, SFA picked up right where it left off Friday, defeating Nebraska 1,038-997. Freshman Stephanie Schwartz was one of three Ladyjacks to bowl over 200, notching a team-high 227, with freshman Morgan Reising bowling a 225 and sophomore Paige Kraushaar adding a 209.
Round two pitted SFA against Texas Southern where the Ladyjacks notched a convincing 1,119-899 victory over the Tigers. Senior Chelsea King bowled a day-high 249, the second-best game of her career, to lead SFA while Kraushaar (235), Reising (226) and freshman Kelsi Anderson (210) all eclipsed the 200-pin mark.
The Ladyjacks then went up against fourth-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore and had another strong showing, besting the Hawks 1,092-1,060 behind a 241 from Anderson. Kraushaar notched a 236, one pin better than Reising's 235 as Schwartz posted a 203 to lead the Ladyjacks to the victory.
SFA's eight-match winning streak came to a halt in match four as the Ladyjacks were upset by LIU-Brooklyn 971-964. Schwartz led the way with a 227 with Kraushaar adding a 211 as the duo were the only two SFA bowlers to surpass the 200-pin mark against the Blackbirds.
The Ladyjacks bounced back in the following match against Sacred Heart, earning a 1,033-935 victory over the Pioneers. All five SFA bowlers reached the 200-pin mark, led by Kraushaar's 215 and junior Danielle Lynn's 209. Schwartz (204), King (203) and Reising (202) all added to a balanced SFA attack.
The final match of the day saw Nebraska and SFA go head-to-head for the third time in two days, but this time it was the Cornhuskers that prevailed 1,023-851. No Ladyjack bowlers reached 200 against Nebraska as Kraushaar was the high scorer for SFA, bowling a 190.
SFA holds a five pin advantage over both third-place LIU-Brooklyn (201.5) and fourth-place Sam Houston State (201.2) heading into Sunday's bracket play as the Ladyjacks control their own destiny as they seek the third tournament title in program history. Kraushaar also paced SFA as she finished fourth among the individual scoring average with a 216.00, meaning she will earn all-tournament honors for the second time this season.
Sunday's best-of-seven bracket play begins with the fourth meeting of the tournament between SFA and Nebraska as the winner of that match will earn a bye to the tournament championship.
