HOUSTON – Stephen F. Austin made a strong showing over the opening day of its host tournament, recording a perfect 5-0 record and sitting second among the team standings after the first day of the 2015 Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic at the Palace Lanes in Houston.
SFA finished the round with 6,303 pins, averaging 210.1 per game to sit second behind top-ranked Nebraska’s 219.4 average. Long Island-Brooklyn ranks third (205.3) with Sam Houston State (203.0) and Maryland-Eastern Shore (202.7) the only other schools to average over 200 on day one.
The Ladyjacks opened their host tournament with a thrilling 960-953 win over St. Francis (N.Y.), bowling a 230 in game one and a 223 in game two to propel SFA to the victory. The Ladyjacks took the fourth 198-159, then recorded just enough pins I the fifth to defeat the Terriers by the seven-pin margin.
SFA then eclipsed the 200-pin mark in four of its five games against Alabama-Birmingham, defeating the Blazers 1,087-986. SFA bowled a match-high 236 in game two, complemented by scores of 229, 224 and 213 to pace the Ladyjacks to the victory.
After a bye round, SFA then went up against Prairie View A&M and dominated the Panthers in a 1,059-879 victory. The Ladyjacks won four of the five games against PVAMU, recording at least 200 pins in four of the five games with a match-high 234 in the final set.
SFA kept its dominance of SWAC schools rolling in match five, racing past Southern 1,018 to 749. The Ladyjacks didn’t drop a game against the Jaguars, including bowling a day-high 242 in game two while notching a 223 in game three and a 206 in game four.
The final match of the day pitted fifth-ranked SFA against top-ranked Nebraska. The Ladyjacks won the first 241-212 before falling in the second 268-224. After notching victories in both the third (191-187) and fourth (214-203), SFA and Nebraska were knotted up at 870 heading into the final game of the day. The Ladyjacks hit the pins they needed to, defeating the Cornhuskers 215-200 in game five to capture the match 1,085-1,070, improving to 5-0 on the day.
SFA and Nebraska will get quite familiar with each other, however, as the two teams will square off in the first match of Saturday’s traditional style format. It will be the first of six matches on the day for the Ladyjacks who are looking to capture their first tournament title of the season in their home event.
