LOS CABOS, Mexico – Stephen F. Austin maintained its position over the final 18 holes of the 2015 Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate, finishing ninth overall. The Lumberjacks shot a 14-over 302 over the final day, posting a 40-over 904 for the 54-hole event.
SFA was led by senior Luke Sheehan who carded an even-par 72 in round three to finish with a 2-over 218, tying for 11th in the individual standings. It is the 18th top-20 finish of Sheehan’s SFA career, finishing one stroke shy of a top-10 showing.
Fellow senior Nathan Weant just missed a top-20 finish of his own, tying for 24th with a 6-over 222, including a 2-over 74 Tuesday. Weant was four shots better than junior Baxter Ward’s 10-over 226 as Ward shot a 1-over 73 Tuesday. Cory Brown (22-over 238) rounded out the Lumberjack scorecard with Nick Maynard posting a 12-over 84 after missing Monday’s second round.
Stephen F. Austin finished 14 shots better than 10th-place Georgia State “B” (54-over 918) and was back-and-forth with eighth-place Seattle (35-over 899) jockeying for position, eventually finishing five shots back of the Redhawks. The Lumberjacks finished 11 shots back of seventh-place UC Irvine (29-over 893).
Georgia State captured the team title with a 6-under 858, holding off second-place Georgia Southern (3-under 861) by three shots. UT-Arlington (3-over 867) finished third with Louisiana-Lafayette and host Santa Clara (5-over 869) tying for fourth and Cal State-Northridge (11-over 875) placing sixth overall.
With the first tournament of the 2015-16 season in its rear view mirror, SFA now sets its sights for the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament, being hosted by New Mexico State, takes place October 19-20 in Las Cruces, N.M.
