LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Stephen F. Austin moved up one spot over the final 18 holes of the 2015 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, finishing ninth overall with a 36-over 888. The Lumberjacks shot a 15-over 298 over the final round, finishing one shot back of eighth overall.
Angelo Leyvani made an impression Tuesday as the freshman shot an even-par 71 over the final 18 holes, including a 2-under 33 over the front nine. He was strong on the par-fives, shooting a 4-uunder and finishing with a 4.56 average for the event, as he finished the 54-hole event with a 9-over 222, tying for 29th overall.
He was joined in the tie by sophomore teammate Tony Underwood, who carded a 3-over 74 on the day. Underwood was even par over the front nine and matched Leyvani’s 9-over 222, sitting third among all golfers by going even on the par 3s for a 3.00 average.
Senior Nathan Weant and junior Baxter Ward finished tied for 43rd in the individual standings as the duo each posted a 12-over 225. Ward had a strong back nine, birdieing four of the first five holes, and posting a 1-under 35, while Weant posted nine pars and two birdies to finish with a 5-over 76.
Senior Luke Sheehan rounded out the SFA scorecard with an 8-over 79, finishing at 13-over 226.
Beginning the day in 10th-place, SFA was able to overtake Northern Illinois (40-over 892) for ninth, finishing three strokes back of eighth-place Odessa College (33-over 885). The ‘Jacks were four strokes off the pace of seventh-place Sam Houston State (32-over 884) as SFA records its second top-10 showing of the 2015-16 season.
UTEP cruised to the team title, finishing at 2-over 854 and besting second-place Grand Canyon (19-over 871) by 17 strokes to secure the win. There was a three-way tie for third, consisting of Wichita State, Colorado State and Southland Conference foe Lamar (24-over 876) with host New Mexico State finishing sixth (25-over 877).
SFA returns to action next week when the Lumberjacks head to Vero Beach, Florida, for the 2015 Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational. Hosted by SLC foe McNeese the tournament will be held Monday, October 26 through Tuesday, October 27, wrapping up the fall schedule for the Lumberjacks.
