Tournament Information
The 2015 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate will be a 54-hole tournament, being held at the New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The course will be a par-71, measuring 7,242 yards, as the opening two rounds will be held on Monday, October 19, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday’s final round will also be a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. with live scoring available at Golfstat.com.
Tournament Field
14 teams will compete in the 2015 event as SFA is one of four Southland Conference schools among the field, joined by Incarnate Word, Lamar and Sam Houston State. Colorado State is the highest-ranked team among the field, checking in at number 61 in the latest GolfStat rankings, with Wichita State (No. 106), host New Mexico State (No. 107) and UTEP (No. 148) among the top-150. Grand Canyon, Northern Illinois, UT-Arlington, UT-Rio Grande Valley, Western New Mexico and Odessa College complete the 14-team field.
Lumberjack Scorecard
The five SFA golfers comprising this week’s Lumberjack scorecard will be seniors Luke Sheehan and Nathan Weant, junior Baxter Ward, sophomore Tony Underwood and freshman Angelo Leyvani.
Herb Wimberly History
SFA will be making its fourth overall appearance at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate this week and the first for the Lumberjacks in 15 years as the last time SFA made the trek to Las Cruces was for the 2000-01 event. SFA shot a 16-over 880, placing seventh out of 17 teams. The Lumberjacks also competed in the event in both the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons, placing 11 in both of those tournaments.
Last Time Out
SFA opened up the 2015-16 season with a ninth-place showing at the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate in Los Cabos, Mexico, October 5-6. The Lumberjacks finished with a 40-over 904, including a 299 in round two, as SFA was led by senior Luke Sheehan’s 2-over 218, finishing tied for 11th overall. Sheehan fired an even-par 72 in both rounds one and three, recording the 18th top-20 showing of his Lumberjack career.
Looking Ahead
SFA returns to action next week, closing out the condensed 2015-16 fall season by competing in the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational in Vero Beach, Florida. Hosted by Southland Conference rival McNeese State, the 54-hole tournament gets underway Monday, October 26, before wrapping up Tuesday, October 27.
