SFA Finishes Seventh at Kutztown Invitational

READING, Pa. – Stephen F. Austin went 2-1 over the final day of competition at the Kutztown Invitational, finishing seventh among the 27-team field. SFA posted an 11-3 record over the three-day event, finishing with a 201.2 scoring average.
Entering Sunday’s action in seventh-place, the Lumberjacks matched up with North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the best-of-seven baker bracket play. The Ladyjacks dropped the opening game, but rebounded to win the next four, including scoring 222 and 224 in games three and four, to secure the 4-1 win over N.C. A&T.
SFA then faced Vanderbilt, a new Southland Bowling League foe, in the second round as the Ladyjacks looked to secure a top-five finish. It proved to be one of the most competitive matchups of the day as the Commodores raced out to an early 3-0 lead. In game four, SFA bested Vanderbilt by one pin (248-247), then had a pair of convincing wins in games five and six to force the decisive seventh game. But the Ladyjacks pulled away in the final stanza, handing SFA the 192-167 defeat to secure the 4-3 victory.
The final match of the day pitted SFA in a rematch with North Carolina A&T as once again the Ladyjacks dropped the opening game, only to rebound to win the next three. N.C. A&T took the fifth 200-145 but the Ladyjacks were able to close it out with a dominating 235-142 victory in the sixth to secure the seventh-place finish.
Fairleigh Dickinson captured the team championship with Central Missouri finishing in the runner-up slot. Maryland-Eastern Shore, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Vanderbilt rounded out the top-five with Arkansas State placing sixth, one spot ahead of the Ladyjacks.
SFA now gets set to compete in its third tournament in as many weekends, but are excited about the fact it doesn’t have to leave the state of Texas. The Ladyjacks will head to Arlington for the 2015 Prairie View A&M Invitational, getting underway Friday, January 30th before wrapping up Sunday, February 1st.
