SFA Takes Season Opener 6-1 Over MSU

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After being forced to wait a day to play their season opener due to rain, the Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team downed Midwestern State 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
The Ladyjacks (1-0) picked up a convincing season-opening victory, winning all but one match in both doubles and singles against MSU (0-1).
In double’s SFA’s tandem of Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo picked up a convincing 6-1 win over Mustangs Kayla Casey and Taylor Coffman in No. 1 doubles. Ladyjacks Valeria Terentyeva and Vivienne Kulicke also won 6-4 in No. 3 doubles to secure the point.
In singles play, all four Ladyjacks who participated in doubles won again, joined by sophomore Denise Maxl in route to the victory.
Maxl (6-1, 6-1), Kulicke (6-4, 6-2) and Terentyeva (6-2, 6-2) all claimed their matches across No. 2-4 singles with relative ease. In No. 1 singles, Gordo came away with a hard fought 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Casey, while Quevedo took No. 5 singles 7-6 (4) 6-3 over MSU’s Alexis Arrieta. Sophomore Macarena Sedano Acosta fell 6-0 6-4 in No. 6 singles to Lindsay Nocdowixz.
SFA will now get set for a pair of matches in Denton, Texas. The Ladyjacks will play Dallas Baptist at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, before facing North Texas at 2 p.m.
