Head Coach Clint Conque
Opening thoughts:
“Certainly its always nice to get a win. Being able to go to 3-1 at the end of conference play is big for us. I feel happy for those guys who had to suffer through the loss at Weber State last year, and it was nice to get some payback. I’m not happy with the penalties – I thought we shot ourselves in the foot a few times. A lot of those were effort penalties, but we can’t have those and need to clean them up. We played sloppy at times and were faced with adversity there in the third quarter when Weber State cut it to 21-13. But our guys fought through it and we’ll take the win.”
On capitalizing on scoring opportunities:
“We got some quality scoring drives and finished them for the most part, which is always good to see. I thought we did a good job until we missed the field goal, then we changed kickers there and went with Mason Juhl the rest of the night. I think that’s two or three that the senior (Jordan Wiggs) has missed. I was really proud of Mason to come in there and knock down a couple extra points. I thought we played pretty well in special teams play except for the field goals.”
On the number of penalties:
“I’m not happy with how many we had. Again, a lot of those were effort penalties, but we can’t commit 13 penalties for 150 yards against Central Arkansas. We talk a lot about adversity and overcoming adversity and I thought we did a good job of that tonight and just kept playing through it and fighting through it. I thought the offense responded when it needed to.”
On preparing for Central Arkansas:
“We’re going to go work. We are going to come in here tomorrow night and get some work done. The traditional day off is Monday, and then Tuesday we are going to start game planning a little bit, but we are going to start working with our younger players. As a coaching staff, we’ll have one eye on our game preparation for UCA and probably give the kids off a couple of days off at the end of the week. We’ve got some guys who are pretty banged up right now, so we’ll use this time to get them healed up as best as we can. We’ve got to get healthy and focus on ourselves and then get ready for eight straight conference games without a break.”
On the limited carries for Gus Johnson:
“I thought (Weber State) did a pretty good job of bottling up Gus after the first quarter. They started stacking the box more and sticking to man coverage. I think we need to stay committed with him probably a little bit more. Zach (Conque) gave us some really positive plays in the run game in the red zone. We are going to go as Gus goes and when people stack the box we’ve got to throw the football with efficiency and at times we did that. Of course when you play a lot of man coverage your going to hit and miss a lot of things but the ones you hit on you have to make them pay.”
On Collin Garrett’s performance:
“Phenomenal. He was all over the field, of course he’s doing a lot of things for us in the kicking game as well. He’s just one heck of a football player. Defensively, we are playing with fanatical effort and I love it, our players love it. But we got to play it cleaner.”
On getting ready for Southland Conference play:
“The games become a little bit tighter now with conference starts in two weeks. We’ve got eight straight conference games with no breaks so if your going to be a contender and make it not so difficult on yourself, you need to defend your home turf. We all know each other so well throughout the conference and so everything gets a little tighter, the games become closer and every play becomes magnified.
Senior linebacker Collin Garrett
On his career night:
“It was nice tonight but I give all the credit to my teammates. The defensive line kept the (Weber State) offensive line off us linebackers and the jack backers contained the outside forcing the running back into me or my other linebackers. I give credit to my other teammates. They had a great game tonight.”
On the defense buying in to the new coaching staff:
“Everybody has bought in. Everyone is committed to doing their job instead of having the attitude that its all about me. Everybody has bought in to what coach Conque says and bringing that “fanatical effort” every play. This coaching came in and they were all about business and wanted to win right off the bat. They drilled that into us and everyone just absorbed that.”
On redeeming last year’s loss to Weber State:
“It feels really good knowing what Weber state did to us last year. You always want to get that revenge on somebody, so this one, it feels good. We are going to enjoy this one for 24 hours and starting tomorrow we are going to start preparing for UCA.”
On what the bye week will mean to the team:
“Its really big. We get to recuperate, get our bodies back too 100% and hone in on the University of Central Arkansas. We’ll start studying film, start preparing for them so when we get out there we can be defensively and offensively sound and the special teams should be perfect.”
