SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) 2014 All-Academic team and had three Ladyjacks named scholar-athletes by the association announced Thursday afternoon.
"I am very proud of the girls for achieving this important academic award together,” head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. “This shows we run a serious program both on and off the court. I would like to thank our academic advisor, Casey Finnell, for all her professionalism and support that made this classroom success possible."
In addition to the team honor, SFA had three Ladyjacks named ITA scholar-athletes in Laura Servise (3.72 GPA – kinesiology major/health science minor), Valeria Terentyeva (4.00 GPA – physics and astronomy major/math minor) and Andrea Ternera (3.85 GPA – international business major), whom each made the grade.
The ITA all-academic team award is open to any ITA member program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, or CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2013 and spring 2014).
In order to earn ITA scholar-athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
All members of the 2014 All-Academic Teams and ITA Scholar-Athletes receive a certificate to recognize the achievement.
SFA was one of three Southland Conference teams to earn the academic award. The Ladyjacks were joined by Abilene Christian, Northwestern State and McNeese State.
