McKINNEY, Texas – Stephen F. Austin fired a pair of subpar rounds over the first day of the Jim West Intercollegiate, firing a 5-under 571. However, competing against a strong field, the Lumberjacks currently sit in eighth-place heading into Tuesday’s final round.
SFA opened up the 54-hole tournament with an even-par 288, led by junior Bradley Phelps’ 3-under 69 to tie his career-best. Junior Luke Sheehan checked in with an even-par 72 to help pace the ‘Jacks.
Round two saw SFA shave five strokes off its opening round total, tying the program’s season-low round with a 5-under 283. Junior Blake Pugh, sophomore Major Monzingo and redshirt freshman Baxter Ward all carded 2-under 70s over the second 18 holes, giving Monzingo a career-best round after shaving nine strokes off his first round 79.
Ward currently sits atop the SFA scorecard with a 1-under 143 (73-70), sitting tied for 23rd among the individual standings. Pugh is one stroke back with an even-par 144 (74-70), tied for 28th overall.
Sheehan posted a 1-over 145 on the day (72-73), two shots better than Phelps’ 3-over 147 (69-78). Monzingo rounded out the Lumberjack scorecard with a 5-over 149 (79-70), matching the score from freshman Cory Brown (73-76) who is competing as an individual.
SFA is one of nine teams that closed out the opening two rounds under par, leading ninth-place McNeese State (4-under 572) by one shot. The ‘Jacks are three shots out of fifth place, sitting in prime position behind Central Arkansas (8-under 568), UT-Arlington (7-under 569) and host Texas State (6-under 570).
10th-ranked Virginia notched an impressive performance through the first two rounds, running away with the team title with a 36-under 540. Iowa State (23-under 553) is 13 shots back of the Cavaliers in second-place with Louisiana-Monroe (20-under 556), Sam Houston State (14-under 562) and UCA rounding out the top-five.
The ‘Jacks will try to make their move over the final 18 holes, which get underway Tuesday morning at TPC Craig Ranch. SFA will be teamed up with the Bobcats and Cowboys in the final round pairings with live scoring available at GolfStat.com.
