SFA's Season Ends In Semifinal Loss To NWST

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Stephen F Austin women’s tennis team had their season come to a close in a 4-1 loss to top-seeded Northwestern State in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on the campus of host Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
"I am very proud of the way the girls battled today,” head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. “Northwestern State is a very well coached team and their doubles was rock solid today. They got very confident with the momentum earned in doubles and started very strong in singles. Our girls did not give up and we pushed them against the fence in four singles matches that could have gone either way."
Junior Malena Gordo defeated NWST’s (20-5) Polina Konop 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 singles to record the only win for SFA (12-11), as the Ladyjacks were eliminated from the tournament.
The tandem of Polina Konop and Tatiana Larina defeated Gordo and junior Julia Lorca 8-0 in No. 1 doubles, before following with an 8-3 victory in No. 2 doubles to secure the opening point.
The Lady Demons then picked up 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 wins in No. 5 and No. 2 singles, before Gordo got the Ladyjacks on the board. Up 3-1, NWST’s Kateryna Piatakova sealed the match with hard fought 7-5, 7-5 edging of Lorca in No. 4 singles to advance to the championship match.
SFA’s loss marks the final match for seniors Laura Servise and Rachel Pierce.
