
Lamar Downs SFA To Even Series

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team was only able to manage one scoring inning, falling 7-3 to Lamar to even the series on Saturday afternoon at Jaycees Field.
Senior Ricardo Sanchez was the only SFA (17-25, 8-12 SLC) player to turn in a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. The ‘Jacks recorded seven hits in all, being outhit 10-7 by LU (25-17, 11-9 SLC), as Sam Bumpers singled in the opening frame to extend his streak of consecutive games with a hit to 26 games and set the school’s single-season mark.
Sophomore Matthew Dickey finished 1-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Mackenzie Handel, Brett Thornell, Kyle Thornell and Nick Ramos, also recorded one hit.
Senior Kevin Bishop (1-6) took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits across seven innings. The native of College Station, Texas, recorded two strikeouts and walked three in 31 batters faced.
After three scoreless, the Cardinals broke up the pitcher’s duel with one run in the top of the fourth. LU opened with consecutive singles from Jacoby Middleton and Kevin Santana, before Mason Salazar reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners at the corners. Justin Eckols then followed with a single to third base one batter later to plate Middleton and take a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals added one in the top of the seventh, before tacking on five more one inning later to put the game out of reach.
Down 7-0, SFA got consecutive doubles from Dickey and Sanchez to break up the shutout and score three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Ramos singled to open the frame and Kyle Thornell followed with a base hit to put runners at the corners with one out. Freshman Will Vest then reached on a fielder’s choice, trading places with Thornell, setting up for Dickey’s two-bagger.
The ‘Jacks will go for the series win in a 10:00 a.m. first pitch on Sunday. The game was originally scheduled for 1:00 a.m., but has moved up due to expected bad weather.
