FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin freshman Piper Kyle has been named a second team All-Southland Conference selection, announced today by the league office. Kyle becomes the first Ladyjack golfer in the program's five-year history to earn All-SLC honors.
"This is a great honor for Piper, and one that is very deserving," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "She came in very competitive and wanted to win right away, and in the spring season she really found her groove. Piper is one of the main reasons for the success we've had this season and it is a big step for both her and the program. She will continue to be a leader for SFA going forward."
The honor caps an incredible freshman campaign for Kyle who recorded one of the top seasons in SFA women’s golf history. She finishes the year with a 77.56 scoring average over 27 rounds, the lowest single-season scoring average in program history. Kyle ended her freshman season tying for third at the Southland Conference Championships, the highest-ever tournament finish for the Ladyjacks.
The Plano native made her mark in the program’s record book, recording the third, fifth, and sixth lowest 54-hole tournament scores en route to notching four top-20 finishes. Her 1-under 71 in the first round of the SLC Championships is also tied for the third-best single-round score as she became the fifth golfer to card a sub-par round.
Kyle played a key role in helping SFA to its top overall season in 2013-14 as the Ladyjacks set a new team record with a 311.85 scoring average and four top-five team finishes. She finished among the top two SFA golfers in six of the Ladyjacks’ 10 tournaments this season, leading the team on three occasions.
The 2014 All-Southland Conference teams were voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Kyle was one of three freshmen named to the All-Conference teams, joining Lamar’s Wenny Chang and Bertille DuPont.
