DENTON, Texas – A three-run home run put the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks on top 4-3 in the fourth inning at North Texas on Wednesday evening, but it was not enough to get the road victory over the Mean Green as SFA fell 5-4.
With the Ladyjacks trailing 3-0 in the top of the fourth, SFA proceeded to score four runs and take the lead looking to avenge a loss to UNT earlier this season. Elizabeth Arana started the rally with a one-out infield hit. A walk by Shalie Day and a single by Katelyn Standley loaded the bases for Brittany Lewis.
Arana scored on a wild pitch, and Lewis blasted the ball over the fence to go up 4-3. It was Lewis’ fourth homer of the season and moves her to 27 RBI on the year to lead the team.
SFA’s lead was short-lived, however, after Jordan Terry started the bottom of the fourth with a triple. She then scored on a single by Dani Hoff to tie it up 4-4. The Mean Green reclaimed the lead in the fifth with another lead-off single, a sacrifice bunt and a double to plate the winning run.
The Ladyjacks were able to load the bases with two outs in the fifth but could not plate any runs. They then went three-up, three-down in the sixth and seventh.
Lewis led the Ladyjacks hitting 2-for-3 on the day with her three RBI and run scored. She also started the day on the mound and threw a no-decision with 3.1 innings. Hannah Welch took the loss after coming in to relieve Lewis in the fourth.
Ashley Kirk threw a complete game for the Mean Green. Terry and Jen Beardsley both hit 2-for-3.
The Ladyjacks return home this weekend for a Southland Conference series against league newcomers Abilene Christian. A doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Saturday with the series finale scheduled for noon Sunday. SFA is 7-1 at home this year with the lone loss coming against Northwestern State.
