MAGNOLIA, Texas - Stephen F. Austin closed out its most successful Southland Conference Championship in program history as the Ladyjacks placed fifth with a 66-over 930. SFA saved its best for last, firing an 18-over 306 over the final 18 holes, the third-best score of the day and the eighth-best single-round total in the program's existence.
The fifth-place finish is two spots better than the program's previous high finish as the Ladyjacks placed seventh in both 2012 and 2013. SFA finished eighth in 2010 and 2011. It also marks the fourth fifth-place finish of the year for the Ladyjacks, a new program record for top-five finishes in a single season.
The Ladyjacks also notched another program milestone as freshman Piper Kyle finished tied for third with an 8-over 224, capped by a 3-over 75 in round three (71-78-75). Kyle shot even over the final nine holes and becomes the first top-five finisher in SFA program history, as well as the first player to notch a top-10 finish at the conference tournament for the Ladyjacks.
Senior Aliece Anderson capped her SFA career in style as well, recording a 2-over 74 over her final collegiate round with four birdies on the day to finish with a 17-over 233 (81-78-74). Anderson tied for 15th overall, becoming the second top-20 finisher at the SLC Championship (with Kyle) and posting the sixth top-20 showing of her SFA career (first this season).
Sophomore Sydney Reed posted a 7-over 79 over the final 18 holes to tally a 22-over 238 (77-82-79), tying for 25th overall. Freshman Jessica White tied for 28th with a 23-over 239 (81-80-78) while fellow freshman Ann Holcomb tied for 36th with a 26-over 242 (83-78-81) in their first conference event.
SFA entered the day in fifth-place just three strokes back of fourth-place Sam Houston State. The Ladyjacks were able to gain just one stroke on the Bearkats, however, as SHSU shot a 19-over 307 to place fourth. SFA was able to distance itself from sixth-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (76-over 940), besting the Islanders by 10 shots.
Lamar captured the 2014 Southland Conference Championship with a 40-over 904, defeating runner-up Oral Roberts (46-over 910) by six shots after posting a 13-over 301. Central Arkansas (56-over 920) finished third with the Bearkats and Ladyjacks rounding out the top-five.
With the conclusion of the SLC Championships, SFA brings to a close arguably the top season in the program's five-year history. The Ladyjacks set a new program record with a 311.85 scoring average, an improvement of six shots from last season (317.74). SFA finishes the year with four top-five finishes as individually the Ladyjacks accounted for a pair of top-10 and 10 top-20 showings on the year.
The future continues to look bright for SFA women's golf as its SLC Championship card consisted of three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior as Anderson is the only SLC tournament competitor the Ladyjacks lose heading into 2014-15.
