NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team led 6-5 headed into the sixth inning but could not hold on, falling 20-10 to Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night at Jaycees Field.
SFA (10-13) recorded 10 runs with 10 hits in the loss to the Patriots (17-7). The 'Jacks were led at the plate by freshman Brandon Smith and senior Brett Thornell, who both collected a pair of hits on the night. Smith finished two-for-four with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while Thornell turned in nearly the same offensive numbers, in one less at bat and minus the two-bagger. Thornell was two-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored.
On the mound junior Halden Maynard (0-1) wore the loss, his first of the season, as one of eight SFA relievers to see action in place of starter Chris Hassold.
The 'Jacks responded from a three-run opening frame by DBU with a six-spot of their own to stake themselves out front after one inning. After the Patriots scratched across one more in the top of the second, the 6-4 advantage held for SFA headed into fifth.
DBU's Nash Knight delivered a two-out, two-run single through the left side to tie the game, before a two-run homerun from Mike Wesolowski gave them an 8-6 advantage one inning later.
The 'Jacks answered with one-run in the bottom of the sixth, as senior Rick Cruz delivered Smith on a single through the left side. However, the Patriots outscored SFA 12-3 over the remaining three innings to put the game out of reach.
The 'Jacks, returning to Southland Conference action, will continue their four-game home series on Friday, hosting Central Arkansas.
