NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks jumped on UT-San Antonio right away and never looked back notching a 9-1 victory in six innings on Thursday afternoon.
SFA (12-12) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits and a pair of errors by UTSA (11-15). The Ladyjacks shutdown the Roadrunners with strong pitching from freshman Brittany Lewis and then added two more runs in the third inning thanks to another error and some more timely hitting.
The Roadrunners struggled on defense committing seven errors on the day, and the Ladyjacks capitalized. Only three of SFA’s nine runs were earned in the victory, and Head Coach Gay McNutt said she was happy with her team’s overall performance.
“I was very pleased. We need to get some people hitting that I think need to hit and that was a perfect opportunity,” McNutt said. “Brittany Lewis threw a heck of a ballgame for us. We’re very confident but we’re keeping things in perspective. This team is doing a great job of staying focused on one game at a time. We’ve very confident going into the weekend.”
At the plate for SFA, three players went 2-for-3 with senior shortstop Elizabeth Arana and first baseman Shalie Day both driving in two runs. Lewis had one RBI to go with her two hits on the day. Arana also scored twice, while Taylor LeFlore plated three times hitting 1-for-4 but reaching on an error and fielder’s choice during the game.
Lewis threw a complete game for the victory and only allowed three hits. One of those hits was a solo home run by Megan Low in the sixth inning. Lewis tallied four strikeouts as well to earn her fourth win of the season.
The Ladyjacks travel to Central Arkansas this weekend for their second Southland Conference series of the season. SFA was the only team in the league to open conference play 3-0 last weekend.
