FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Stephen F. Austin could not ride the momentum of a win over a ranked opponent on Friday night into Saturday’s action at the Woo Pig Fastpitch Classic as the Ladyjacks fell to Drake and LaTech to close the weekend. SFA lost to Drake 8-0 and then to Louisiana Tech 5-3.
The Ladyjacks had hot bats against No. 24 Arkansas on Friday night, but they went cold against Drake with only three hits in an 8-0 loss. Drake slapped 12 hits and took advantage of three SFA errors on defense to score its eight runs.
It was a tied up in a scoreless game heading into the bottom of the third inning when Drake began to produce at the plate. The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the third and proceeded to score in each of the next three innings to get the 8-0 win in six innings. Drake scored three in the bottom of the sixth to cut the game short by an inning.
SFA (8-12) tried to bounce back against LaTech in a game for third place at the tournament and again could not produce enough offense to get the victory.
The Ladyjacks struck first with two runs in the top of the first on a two-run double by Brittany Lewis. The Lady Techsters answered with three runs in the bottom half to claim the lead and never surrendered it.
LaTech added two more runs in the bottom of the third to move up 5-2. SFA manufactured a run in the top of the fifth but could not muster any more runs in the 5-3 loss.
The Ladyjacks open Southland Conference play next weekend when they host Nicholls with a doubleheader on Saturday and a series finale on Sunday.
