Ward, Phelps Tied For First at Moe O'Brien

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Two Lumberjacks are tied for first after the opening 36 holes at the Moe O'Brien Intercollegiate in Lake Charles, La. Redshirt freshman Baxter Ward and junior Bradley Phelps both sit atop the leaderboard after the duo shot a 5-under 139 on the first day of the tournament.
Ward set a personal-best in the opening round of the event, firing an even-par 72, then shattered that mark with a 5-under 67 in round two. Phelps posted a 2-under 70 in round one, then tied his career-low with a 3-under 69 in round two competing as an individual. Ward and Phelps head into Tuesday's final round with a one-stroke lead over a pair of golfers currently tied for third.
The duo are two of four Stephen F. Austin golfers currently sitting among the individual top-20 as the Lumberjacks sit third among the team standings with a 1-under 575 through the opening two rounds. SFA was tied for second after round one with a 2-over 290, then carded a 3-under 285.
Ward and Phelps were joined in the top-10 by junior Blake Pugh, who sits at 2-under 142 after notching a 1-under 71 in both rounds on the day. Luke Sheehan is currently in sole possession of 13th overall with a 1-under 143, shooting a 1-under 71 in round one before carding an even-par 72 in round two.
Freshman Cory Brown and junior Austin DeWitt rounded out the SFA scorecard as Brown shot a 9-over 153 (76-77), one stroke better than DeWitt's 10-over 154 (79-75).
Heading into Tuesday's final round, SFA has its sights set on second-place UT-Pan American (2-under 574), who leads the `Jacks by one stroke. Host McNeese State posted a 13-under 563 to sit first among the 13-team field with Southland Conference foes Incarnate Word (11-over 587) sitting fourth and Abilene Christian and Nicholls State tying for fifth with a 14-over 590.
Ward, Phelps and the rest of the Lumberjacks look to make their move Tuesday over the final round of the Moe O'Brien Intercollegiate, getting underway at 8:30 a.m. SFA will team up with McNeese State and UT-Pan American in the final round pairings with full results posted at SFAJacks.com as they become available.
