Texas State Holds Off SFA 4-3

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team rallied from down 3-0, but could not surmount the comeback in a 4-3 loss to Texas State on Sunday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
"I'm proud of the fighting team we are becoming,” head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. “We didn't play particularly great today, but we put ourselves in a position to win against a very good Texas State at their home courts, and in front of their crowd. If we continue to fight and compete this way, we will have a successful conference campaign."
The Ladyjacks (2-4) dropped a contested doubles points and the first two matches of singles play, before turning the tide on TXST (5-2). Junior Malena Gordo started the rally with a 6-2, 6-3 win in No. 2 singles. Sophomore Valeria Terentyeva then followed, defeating the Bobcats’ Eva Dench in come from behind fashion 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 to pull SFA within one (3-2).
TXST responded with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in No. 4 singles, before freshman Macarena Sedano Acosta defeated Katy Collins 7-6 (7-4), 4-7, 7-6 (7-3) to end the match 4-3.
The Ladyjacks will now return to Nacogdoches for their home opener at the Schlief Tennis Complex. SFA will host New Mexico on Friday, Feb. 28, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
