Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawk Classic
Friday, November 14 – Sunday, November 16
Millsboro, Del. • Hosted by Maryland-Eastern Shore
Opening Frame
Stephen F. Austin heads east for the 2014 Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawk Classic. The Ladyjacks are coming off back-to-back top-six finishes and will look to extend that streak against a challenging field.
Tournament Information
The 2014 UMES Hawk Classic will play out similar to the majority of tournaments SFA participates in. Play gets underway Friday morning at 9:55 a.m. CT as the Ladyjacks will compete in five baker-style games, leading into Saturday’s competition which will include six traditional games, beginning at 7:25 a.m. CT. Results from Friday and Saturday will determine the seeding for Sunday’s bracket style, competing in three best-of-seven baker games.
Participating Teams
SFA is one of 18 teams competing this weekend in Delaware as the field will be very challenging with 13 of the 18 teams ranked among the NTCA top-20. The ninth-ranked Ladyjacks are one of six schools ranked among the top-10, being joined by Sam Houston State (third), Vanderbilt (fourth), Maryland-Eastern Shore (fifth), Fairleigh Dickinson (seventh) and St. Francis (Pa.) (10th). Sacred Heart (11th), Kutztown (12th), North Carolina A&T (13th), LIU Brooklyn (14th), Delaware State (19th) and Monmouth (20th) round out the ranked opponents with Adelphi, Franklin Pierce, Howard, New Jersey City and Norfolk State rounding out the field.
SFA Against the Field
Through the first two tournaments of the season, SFA has had some success against the teams they will see in Delaware this weekend, posting a 9-4 (.692) record against their possible opponents this weekend. The Ladyjacks are 1-0 on the year against Adelphi, Fairleigh Dickinson, Kutztown, LIU Brooklyn, Monmouth, St. Francis (Pa.) and UMES while posting a 1-1 mark against Vanderbilt and are 1-2 against Sam Houston State.
SFA Travel Squad
The Ladyjacks head to Delaware with seven of their eight bowlers ready to go this weekend. Freshman Stephanie Schwartz has won the individual title at the first two tournaments and looks to continue her solid play to start her SFA career. Senior Chelsea King, junior Danielle Lynn and sophomore Paige Kraushaar have all been constants for the Ladyjacks with sophomore Kiara Grant and freshmen Kelsi Anderson and Morgan Reising coming up big as well. Freshman Shana Geerdes did not make the trip due to injury.
Last Time Out
SFA placed sixth at the Fairleigh Dickinson Jamboree on Nov. 2, stumbling over the final day and dropping all three matches in bracket play. Freshman Stephanie Schwartz was a bright spot for the Ladyjacks, however, capturing the individual title for the second-straight tournament with a 225.45 average. Senior Chelsea King ranked eighth among the field with a 207.36 average.
Looking Ahead
Following this weekend’s trip to the east coast, SFA returns to action next weekend by making the short trip down to Houston to compete in the 2014 Sam Houston State Kat Klash. The tournament marks the final event of the calendar year for the Ladyjacks, who will take a break from competition until January.
