Texas Tech Too Much For 'Jacks

LUBBOCK, Texas - After nearly a 50-minute lightning delay to start the game, a dynamic Texas Tech offense proved to be too much for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and the Red Raiders cruised to a 61-13 victory in their home opener at Jones AT&T Stadium Saturday evening.
SFA (0-2) scored on a trick play at the 8:55 mark of the first quarter on a 75-yard touchdown play off a reverse from junior wide receiver Tyler Boyd to senior wide receiver Mike Brooks, cutting the deficit at the time to 14-7.
However, the Red Raiders scored 31 unanswered points to end the first half, with most of their success coming through the air, to take a 45-7 lead into halftime. At night's end Texas Tech (2-0) finished the evening with 731 yards of total offense, 523 of which came in the first half.
Texas Tech (2-0) freshman quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 21-of-30 attempts in the first 30 minutes for 367 yards and three touchdowns. The Red Raiders also had three rushing touchdowns in the first half, two coming from junior Kenny Williams.
SFA starting quarterback Brady Attaway finished the evening 12-of-26 for 83 yards before sophomore Joe Minden entered the game in the third quarter. Minden completed 13-of-17 attempts for 129 yards and threw a fourth quarter touchdown to Marquis Mosley (5 receptions, 91 yards).
Senior wide receiver Brooks, who caught the 75-yard touchdown in the first quarter, led the team with six receptions for 106 yards.
The Lumberjacks defense caused four turnovers on the night, including freshman Patrick Brown's first career interception in the third quarter.
The meeting between SFA and Texas Tech was just the second all-time. The Red Raiders defeated SFA 58-3 in 2001. The game also marked the home coaching debut of first-year head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
SFA will next host McMurry next Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in the home opener.
