NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Freshman first baseman Kaitlyn Mixon came through with the biggest hit thus far of her young career with a walkoff RBI single to left field in the seventh inning to beat the UT-Arlington Mavericks 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the SFA Softball Field.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Ladyjacks (9-21, 2-6) and rewarded a strong complete game starting pitching performance from Carlie Thomas, who earned her fifth win of the season.
With the game tied 1-1, Elizabeth Arana began the bottom of the seventh inning with a leadoff walk. Following a line out to shortstop off the bat off the bat of Cadie Weaver, Jessica Arana laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Elizabeth Arana to second base.
That brought up Mixon and on a 1-1 pitch the freshman connected on a soft line drive that fell in front of UTA left fielder Kelsey Kaiser, allowing Arana to easily score the winning run from second base.
Thomas pitched a splendid game for SFA, allowing just one run on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in seven complete innings. The only run the sophomore allowed was a game-tying homerun to UTA's Erica LeFlore in the sixth inning.
Thomas, a Huntington, Texas native, escaped a major jam in the top of the seventh inning when with the baes loaded and only one out, she got Stephanie Gonzalez to hit a line drive shot right at second baseman Jessica Arana who snagged it and was able to double-off Samantha Kennedy at first base for the double play.
Teri Lyles came on in relief for Callie Collins in the circle in the second inning and took the loss for UTA (12-16, 2-4).
SFA will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Waco to take on the Baylor Bears in a makeup doubleheader that was rained out earlier this season. Following that twin bill, the Ladyjacks will be back in conference action April 6 and 7 at Northwestern State.
