NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were unable to get the bats going in a 1-0 loss to Nicholls State Saturday afternoon at the SFA Softball Field.
Nicholls' starting pitcher Ashton Bennett pitched seven complete innings, allowing just three hits and issuing two walks to improve to 2-7 on the season.
Angela White was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Ladyjacks, pitching seven complete innings while allowing just one unearned run in the seventh inning. White (4-8) allowed five hits, one walk and struck out three.
The Colonels lone run came in the top of the seventh inning that was kickstarted with a one-out double from Ashton Bennett to deep center field. Following a walk to Paige Miller and a passed ball that moved runners to second and third, White proceeded to hit Rachael Huggins to load the bases.
White then enduced Alaina Guidry to hit a slow chopper back to the mound but White booted the comebacker and the ball trickled away far enough to allow pinch-runner Brittany Ezel to score easily from third base.
SFA had a couple of scoring opportunities in the first and sixth innings but Bennett was able to kill the rallies without any further damage.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action on Tuesday, March 27 in a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m. SFA will be back in action in Nacogdoches next weekend March 30-31 in a series against UT-Arlington.
