NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team travels to Arkansas for two matches Saturday, after nearly two weeks away from competition. The 'Jacks will be in Little Rock Saturday morning to face UALR (10 a.m.), followed by a short trip over to Conway to open Southland Conference play against Central Arkansas (4 p.m.).
The 'Jacks enter the matches with a 4-2 (.667) overall record, and riding a two-match win streak with wins over North Texas and Colorado. SFA has been playing some of its best tennis during the past couple weeks winning its past two matches by a combined score of 13-1. UALR enters Saturday's match 5-4 on the season and riding a five-match win streak, while the Sugar Bears are 1-3 (.250) overall, and 0-2 in conference play and have dropped three straight.
SFA's singles lineup is led by a couple of freshmen that have put together strong starts to the 2012 season. Tereza Bekerova has played the No. 1 singles spot all season and has posted a 4-2 (.667) mark, while classmate Elena Kordolaimi is 5-1 (.833) in the three hole, and is 11-3 on the season.
The 'Jacks' No. 2 doubles team of senior Alina Shazhko and freshman Jithmie Jayawickrema have jumped out to the strongest start on the squad. The duo is 5-0 at No. 2 doubles, and their five wins include two victories over teams ranked in the nation's top 30.
SFA will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 19, when it travels to Starkville, Miss., to face Mississippi State. The match against the Bulldogs is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
